Best Beer for a Michelada: What Actually Works and What Doesn't

Does the Beer Choice Actually Matter?

Yes, significantly more than most people think. The beer is half the drink. A Michelada built on the wrong beer style turns the savory spiced base into a battle of conflicting flavors. Get the beer right and the whole cocktail elevates.

Light Mexican Lager: The Standard and For Good Reason

Modelo Especial is the most popular Michelada base in the US right now by a wide margin. Its clean, mild flavor and light carbonation let the spiced base lead without fighting it. Tecate is sharper and slightly more bitter, which works well if your mix skews sweeter. Pacifico has a mild saltiness that complements lime beautifully. Any of these three is a correct answer.

Other Lagers That Work

Corona is lighter and more neutral than the Mexican trio, which makes it adaptable but less interesting. Dos Equis Lager Especial works well. For American options, Miller High Life (marketed as the Champagne of Beers and not wrong about the carbonation) is a surprisingly solid Michelada base.

What Does Not Work

IPAs. The aggressive hop bitterness collides with the tomato and spice in a way that is genuinely unpleasant. Dark beers like stouts and porters overpower the Michelada base and destroy the savory-refreshing balance. Wheat beers tend to go muddy. If it has a strong flavor profile on its own, it is not your Michelada beer.

Regional Beer Preferences

In South Texas and along the border, Tecate is the default choice with almost no discussion. In California, Modelo dominates. In the Midwest, domestic light lagers are more common. In Mexico City, the preparation sometimes calls for a dark beer (Michelada Oscura), which is a legitimate variation and worth trying.

With a mix as well-balanced as Manny's, almost any clean lager works. The mix does not need the beer to fill gaps in flavor. That is exactly the point. Choose your lager based on your preference. Let Manny's handle the rest.
